Huck goes to the Zoo

It’s going to be a busy week for old Fin. It’s good to keep busy. They tell you that anyway. I have a nice mix of work and pleasure. I woke up late because I was travelling last night. Where was I travelling from? Good question. That’s what I am going to talk about today. Welcome to Monday and welcome to Zoo Club.

My friend Nick has been telling me about the re-emergence of an event in his hometown of Kilkenny. It was called Zoo Club/Underground, and it finished over 15 years ago. Nick and I haven’t known each other long but I know he used to be in a band. The one-off reunion show has been in the works for a while and Nick has been giving me the inside scoop every step of the way.

Like I said in the introduction, I have been a busy boi lately. But I knew I had to get to Kilkenny to see Nick perform for the first time. That meant driving to Kilkenny for the first time. It was going to be an adventure and I was up for it.

It turns out that getting to Kilkenny from Wexford isn’t straightforward. You have to keep heading towards a different county and eventually, you will see signs for Kilkenny. It took me about an hour and a half. I travelled through all sorts of winding country roads and towns I had never been to before and eventually onto a motorway. It was quite an adventure.

I got to Kilkenny in the early afternoon and helped Nick bring some last-minute gear into the venue. After that, I went for lunch with a mutual friend of ours who doesn’t have a nickname so I won’t give him one.

The show kicked off and Nick’s band was up first. Before last night, Nick tried to explain to me the sound of his band, Bad Mothers Union. The phrase avant-garde comes to mind. But, as I said to Nick afterwards, sometimes it’s nice to be open-minded and listen to something different. I was all for it. I was very proud of Nick. I hope this won’t be the last time I watch his band perform live. But that’s not up to me.

There is a documentary in the works about the event and so I will share that whenever it materializes. Thank you for reading this blog today. I appreciate it. You are the best. Yes, you. Thank you for your time.
