Huckleberry and the bank holiday

It’s the start of a new week. It’s the start of a new Fin. Welcome to Monday. I hope you enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend. I know it’s not over yet, but I have some thoughts. Let’s have a bit of a moan.

For many people, yesterday it meant “no work tomorrow” day. For me, yesterday meant OTT day. Yes, the wrestling. I was heading to the big smoke for another afternoon of professional wrestling. It was taking place in the afternoon, being a family-friendly show, in the ringside club at The National Stadium. It’s my favourite venue to see wrestling in for many reasons. Firstly, it’s easily accessible through the LUAS (we all know I love it). Secondly, it’s in the afternoon, without late-night bus journeys. Thirdly, and most importantly, they serve food. I love food. It keeps me alive and whatnot.

The whole “LUAS perk”, as we’ll call it, is mostly applicable if I decide to drive up. Sadly, Gary is currently unwell, so the bus was the way to go. I booked my ticket in advance, and as soon as I got on the bus, I was informed of the Dublin Marathon happening yesterday. That meant that instead of being dropped about a 15-minute walk from the venue, I would have to get off, walk to a LUAS stop, wait, and then walk to the venue. Oh well, I said, can’t be helped.

We were diverted around south Dublin. We even drove past the 3Arena, which brought back memories of a few weeks ago. As I made my way to the LUAS, I realised how busy the city was. Was I going to get a LUAS easily? Read on to find out.

The short answer is no. The LUAS was taking double the amount of time to get around. It wasn’t ideal, if I am honest. I eventually managed to squeeze onto one as I found a small gap deeper in the carriage to stand. I was only four stops away. It wasn’t going to last forever. We eventually come to my stop, and I go to the door and try to get out. I try again. And again. The door closes. The carriage was so jam-packed that I couldn’t even leave. That was the first and hopefully last time that happened to me.

My only option was to get off at the next stop. Thankfully, I had better luck this time. Even though I was only one stop ahead, I still had to check my map and see how long it would take me to get to the ringside club. It said 30 minutes. It was 5 minutes to showtime. Odds were I wasn’t going to make it in time.

I didn’t. I was 30 minutes late. I missed the first match. Funnily enough, I was so late that nobody was at the door to scan my ticket. So, I just sat down. I am not going to say that OTT lacks security, but…I kid, of course. I had a lovely time anyway. I sat beside a young man drinking a can of Orchard Thieves on the bus journey home. I guess that’s Bank Holiday Mondays for you.

That’s my story. I hope you enjoyed it, and again, I hope you enjoyed the bank holiday. I will talk to you on Wednesday for a special blog. Yes, you read that correctly. Thank you for reading, and thank you for your time.
