Please No Nepotism

I was talking to somebody today about how great it is to have deadlines when you are creative. As I delve deeper into creating every day, I get it. Hello, and welcome to Monday. Let me have a bit of a moan.

Saturday Night Live has become more globally popular over the past five years—maybe more. Maybe you disagree. That’s okay. I have only started paying attention to it religiously over the past few years. I like it. It’s something to look forward to on a Sunday when there isn’t much to look forward to on a Sunday.

Sometimes I think about how I would like to work on that show. It seems like a fun place to work. I have no comedy chops whatsoever. It’s okay. My Mam thinks I am funny, and that’s all that counts. Happy belated Mother’s Day to all the mammies out there. You are all incredible people.

A new thing that features on Saturday Night Live (SNL) is Please Don’t Destroy. These three guys are writers for the show but also have one sketch per week that they record primarily in their office. I like them. Their comedy is absurd and surreal. It’s right up my street.

Like many of us, I like to read up on movies/TV shows I like and the actors that feature in them that I am drawn to. I first learned that these guys were all younger than me. As I get older, that is more of a bitter pill. Don’t get me wrong; I am on the right path creatively. The poetry collection and voice actor work is coming soon, by the way. But I can’t help but wonder how these guys get put on this platform at such a young age. Then I did my research.

It turns out that two of the three guys have connections to SNL. Don’t get me wrong; they deserve to be there. But I can’t shake that all it took was a phone call. It frustrates me. Nepotism is a real thing. As I have gotten older, I have seen it more and more. The number of times I have seen people get jobs because their dad knows the boss is maddening.

All I will say is I hope people who have been given these opportunities know how lucky they are. I went to college with someone related to someone high up in RTE. I don’t know if they are working there currently, but I know it is far more likely they will get a job over some shmucks like me.

I am grateful for the life I have. I love my friends and love my family. I love whoever is reading this blog because I know I am coming across as moanier than ever today. I am not apologizing.

I hope you have an incredible week. I have some things I want to say on Friday, and I will say them. Be here for that. You won’t regret it.

Thank you for reading. You look magnificent today. Thank you for your time.
