Valentines Day a retirement home

Lucy was just about to get the lunches ready when there was a buzz at the front entrance gate. She walked into the hall and pressed the intercom button.

“Hello?”

“Well Lucy, it’s me,” said the voice.

“Oh, hi Terry. You’re early” Lucy replied.

“I know. Given the day that’s in it, we’re all out early today. Trying to get all these letters out.”

Lucy walked outside to greet Terry as his green van pulled up in the usual space. He rolled down the window and gathered a pile of envelopes on the passenger seat.

“Cold one today. Are you nearly done?” Lucy asked making small talk.

“’tis, yeah. Nearly done. I’ve an Amazon package for ye as well actually. Here, let me get it.”

With that, Terry opened his door and jumped out, leaving the pile of letters. Lucy followed him around the back of the van. He opened the door and pulled out a relatively small box.

“That’ll be new cartridges for the office printer. Thanks” Lucy said as Terry handed her the box.

“I just need you to sign for it. Hold on” Terry said as he walked back to the front seat of the van. He immediately noticed the pile of letters.

“Ah jazus, what am I like?” he chuckled. He grabbed the handful of letters and walked back to Lucy, who was smirking to herself.

“Some Postman you are…!” she teased. She put the box on the gravel as Terry handed her the tablet to sign for the package.

“I’ll just put those there” he said, putting the letters on top of the box, “there getting smaller these days these letter bundles.”

“I know”, Lucy said handing back the tablet.

“Sure, that’s life. People pass on. People forget. How’s all of them folks anyway?” Terry asked, trying to change the subject.

“All well. They like seeing the van pull up. They’re always hoping for letters. Especially this time of year. But, as you say yourself…” Lucy paused suddenly, “anyway, at least some of them are lucky enough to still be getting letters. Thanks again. See you tomorrow.”

“See you now. Keep your head up. Remember, just because nobody is around to say it, doesn’t mean there isn’t love still there” Terry said, rubbing Lucy’s arm.

“You’re right. Life goes on” Lucy sighed.
