Jam (a poem about friendship)

I went to a poetry event last night. I didn’t want to go. I wasn’t feeling it. I have been off work for the past two weeks and didn’t do as much as I thought I would. I won’t moan. That’s what Mondays are for, as you know, at this stage. Instead, I thought I would discuss last night and share what came out.

Like I said, I wasn’t feeling it yesterday. I debated right up until the late afternoon whether or not I would go. I was going to So Say So, one of my favourite poetry events, and it has finally made its triumphant return, headlined by Maras Poesie, a French poet and rapper, and MC’d by Stephen James Smith, as usual. This event is well worth going to. I think everyone should at least go to watch if they are curious or even want to try to get in front of an audience. After the headline act has performed their set, there is an opportunity to perform. In addition to that, there is a challenge element that you can take part in. Stephen asks for five random words from the audience, and we all write a poem that includes or incorporates the words. The five random words this time were formidable, subh (Irish for jam), satisfaction, novelty and friendship. With that, here is what I wrote:

Friendship is formidable

It's not always as sweet as strawberry jam.

Friendship isn’t a novelty.

Friendship is formidable

I don’t give everyone the satisfaction.

Of calling them a friend

Friendship is formidable

Until the very end

I hope you have a nice weekend. Thank you for reading and thank you for your time.
