Lets do a fight

I’m going to a wrestling show today. I’m really looking forward to it. But not before I get to sit down and try and write something. As this blog has gone on and I’ve been pretty consistent thus far, there is always a part of me when I wake up wondering what I am going to write about. Today, I suppose wrestling is the topic of the day. I like wrestling. I like watching wrestling, more so. I would never try it because frankly I get winded walking upstairs. That’s always my go to joke. I think it gets less funny every time I say it.

Those of you reading this may be wondering about this mysterious show. There is nothing mysterious about it. Its just two men on a canvas mat half naked, sweaty, and trying to get on top of each other. People pay to see that stuff.

If you were to ask me if it is WWF that I am going to see, I would politely reply no and try not to scream at you in saying it hasn’t been WWF for about 20 years. It is WWE now and it is not a product I enjoy. Independent wrestling is where its at. That is where Over the Top Wrestling comes in. OTT is Ireland’s most successful independent wrestling company. It has been around for less than 10 years but has already gathered a massive following. Since 2020, obviously not a lot of shows have taken place and so when they do come around, I think speak for every fan when I say I am giddy with excitement.

To the sceptics out there, let me tell you a quick anecdote. A while ago I was listening to a podcast review an album by a band who may not be for everyone. The reviewer said that you get more out of the album the more you put into it. I think the same goes for wrestling. I think you should go in with an open mind, have fun and don’t take it so seriously. After all, it is just spandex pantomime.

For my MA, I made a radio documentary on OTT wrestling all by myself. I am fairly proud of it and may share it in a future blog post. In it, I interviewed fans about the comparisons between independent wrestling and mainstream wrestling. The answers may surprise you.

At this time, I should probably explain the title of this blog post. It comes from a YouTube channel I follow whom do a Dungeons & Dragons style wrestling game called City British Wrestling. The catchphrase of the promotion is “lets do a fight”. Hence, the title. I am currently wearing their T-shirt. You got to show your support for the creators you like. That’s the problem we in the arts face most of the time.

But that’s a story for another day. It is a story I am still trying to figure out myself. I hope your day is going well. You look great.

Thank you for your time.
